Why are these modules being replaced?

The new modules will continue to help fulfill your organization’s RCR training needs. We are replacing the original modules based on a review of existing modules. Notably, the new modules will better address the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) updated guidance on “instructional component recommendations” (NOT-OD-22-055) and the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) requirement for training that covers “mentor training and mentorship” (PAPPG [NSF 23-1]). However, as mentor training and mentorship norms and expectations continue to evolve, CITI Program may add additional offerings to meet organizations’ needs.

What will the new data management modules cover?

The new “Data Management (RCR-Basic) (ID: 20896)” module will cover the steps, concepts, and importance of data management throughout a research study; institutional support services that can help manage research data; methodological, technological, and regulatory considerations that affect data management practices; documentation needed to facilitate the accessibility and reproducibility of research findings; and ethical and compliance issues relating to data ownership, sharing, and protection.

As a refresher to the basic module, the new “Data Management (RCR-Refresher) (ID 15664)” module will provide a refresher of key topics covered in the new basic module.

What will the new mentoring modules cover?

The new “Mentoring and Healthy Research Environments (RCR-Basic) (ID: 20983)” module will cover the roles and responsibilities of mentors and mentees, challenges that can disrupt or undermine a mentoring relationship, practices and strategies that support high-quality mentoring relationships and help prevent or manage conflicts between mentors and mentees, and leadership behaviors that cultivate a psychologically healthy and supportive work environment.

As a refresher to the basic module, the new “Mentoring and Healthy Research Environments (RCR-Refresher) (ID: 15667)” module will provide a refresher of key topics covered in the new basic module.

What else do I need to know about these updates?

On July 1, these modules will be automatically replaced. Therefore, your organization does not need to take any action. As part of the updates, the current basic modules will be retired and replaced with the new basic modules. We have posted a notice in all courses containing these modules to inform learners of the upcoming updates.
