Q: How do I find my course?
A: You will need to register an account to take a course. Click here for step-by-step instructions.
This video also provides an overview of the registration process:
CITI Program doesn't have a searchable course catalog. Instead, when register a new account or you click "Add a Course," you'll be guided through a series of enrollment questions. The questions are customized for each university based on their course offerings.
Your answers determine which courses are added to your list. The course your professor assigned is unlocked by selecting the right answer to one of these questions. If you're unsure which answer to choose, refer to the table above or ask your professor which option matches their instructions.

Why does my course have a different name?
CITI Program offers training to thousands of universities and organizations, and each one can customize how courses appear to their learners. This means the course name your professor wrote in the syllabus may not exactly match what you see when you log in — but that doesn't mean the course isn't there!
Here are the three most common reasons for a name mismatch:
1. Your university renamed the course. Institutions can give CITI Program courses a custom name that fits their program or department. For example, a course your professor calls "HIPAA Training" may appear in your enrollment questions as "Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS)" — it's the same course, just labeled differently by your school.
2. Your professor used an informal or shortened name. Professors often refer to courses by a shortened or common name rather than the official CITI Program title. For example:
- "The IRB training" → Human Subjects Research (HSR)
- "The plagiarism module" → Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
- "The animal training" → Working with the IACUC
- "HIPAA Basics for Healthcare Professionals" → Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS)
Use the variations table above to find the closest match to what your professor described.
3. The course appears as an enrollment question, not a course title. CITI Program doesn't have a searchable course catalog. Instead, when you click "Add a Course," you'll be guided through a series of questions — your answers determine which courses are added to your list. The course your professor assigned is unlocked by selecting the right answer to one of these questions. If you're unsure which answer to choose, refer to the table above or ask your professor which option matches their instructions.
Still can't find it? If you've reviewed the table and still can't locate your course, it's possible your university hasn't enabled it for your account, or the course name your professor provided doesn't match any available option. In that case:
- Ask your professor to confirm the exact course name or enrollment question answer they intended.
- Contact your university's CITI Program administrator — they control which courses are available to students at your institution.
- If you still need help, contact CITI Support with your university name, your Member ID, and the exact course name your professor provided. We can help identify the right match.
Q: What are CE/CMEs? What do I select for preferred CE credit status?
A: CE/CMEs are Continuing Education Credits for professionals seeking license renewal. You should select "No" if you are not seeking a qualified professional license renewal (most university students would choose No). Full details on this can be found here .
Q: My professor said this course is free, but it is asking me to pay.
A: Courses taken through your university are covered through their subscription. You may have registered as an "Independent Learner" instead of through your university.
If you are on the payment page, click Log In to access your account:
Then from your landing account page, click "Add an Affiliation" to add your university to your account:
Follow the registration steps to add your university affiliation.
